Bright World Host Local Coordinator Conference

Determined to see our standards grow in line with student numbers, this year we decided it was time to change the function and format of our bi-annual Local Coordinator (LC) meeting. A meeting which allowed us to update Bright World’s Local representatives on any major changes that may affect their role as Mentor to students on our guardianship programme and to review the year gone by.
Held over the course of two days at The Hickstead Hotel in Sussex this June saw us host our very first LC Conference with an additional goal; to strengthen the lines of communication between our head office team and Local Coordinators.

Following a tight agenda LCs were placed into groups so that they could attend important meetings with members of the Guardianship head office team to review all areas of their role and to flag up any areas where fluidity between teams could be improved. Members of the Senior Management team also held presentations on the importance of Safeguarding our students, future plans for the new portal, Blink, a review of deadlines for the new academic year and a seminar on cultural differences. Furthermore Director of Admissions Sheena Trist held the attention of all delegates with an overview of her role at Bright World as the head of Boarding School Placements, sharing an insight into her work as a UK based Education Agent.

The two day conference didn’t just have a daytime agenda however, staff members were invited to attend a Courtyard drinks reception where the mingled (some reluctantly) with an extremely convincing David Brent impersonator followed by a 3 course meal with line dancing to round off the evenings events.

So why is communication and unity so important for us here at Bright World?
Behind the scenes at head office we have a centralized team who are responsible for the organisation of the guardianship programme, making all arrangements on behalf of our parents and our Partner Schools. However In order to deliver high standards of service combined with a local on the spot pastoral care service we have a team of Local Coordinators who work for us around the country. Our LCs live close to the schools and are there as a friend and mentor for students on our guardianship programme.

“As we grow and broaden our coverage of the UK however it is important that we keep a sense of unity between all our staff. It is so easy for an organisation that employs remote workers to create a disparate company where standards vary from one region to another.
The conference format seemed to work brilliantly and allowed my staff to spend some quality time together”
Lana Foster, Bright World Managing Director

After a great start we are looking forward to an even bigger event next year where we may even open the doors to close Partners, Schools and parents. Watch this Space!!

The Kings Bournemouth experience...

Last week myself and our Sales and Marketing Manager, Charlotte Hamson travelled down to Bournemouth with Cristina Tejero, Kings UK Regional Manager and Andrew Hutchinson, Director of Kings colleges. The purpose of our visit was twofold. Firstly Charlotte wanted to see for herself the facilities at the College, meet the staff and talk to the Summer School organisers so that she is better geared up to talk to parents and partners about the programmes and the general feel of the college. Secondly, I wanted to find our more about the cooperation that we are embarking on with Kings – an exciting collaboration that will mean we will be helping some of the high flying  young GCSE learners at Kings to find places in top UK boarding schools.

Bright World has already cooperated with Kings and feature in their International High School programme, as do a selection of our close partner schools who expressed an interest in the venture.  This will culminate in October or November this year in a mini-exhibition and education day for the GCSE students where the schools will attend and be available to interview and maybe even test the students for entry in September 2015.

The four of us had great fun on the train, catching up and chatting about the Bright World’s ever-growing guardianship team whilst also discussing Kings Colleges and how they have developed and grown over the past few years. Kings offer a vast range of programmes for International students, including English, GCSE’s, A level, foundation and even Summer School. Andrew and I have worked together for over 20 years and we worked out that together we have more than 50 years’ experience in sales and marketing of educational programmes!

Upon arrival we were greeted by Dermot Tobin the Principal of the college who welcomed us warmly and took them to meet all of the administration staff.  I remembered Dermot’s name from when he was Principal of a school in Brighton – 25 years ago – clearly this gentleman has a lot of experience in being an academic leader and running a school.

We were then told that we would be sitting in on an academic lesson.  I thought this would be useful for Charlotte but actually didn’t think I needed to see this – not with all the experience I have after all.......  I think saw on our itinerary that we would be visiting a host family – again – why on earth would I need to see a British host family?  How many host families have I seen in my life?  Hundreds.......

I went along with the itinerary of course and I am so pleased that I did.  Justin was the IT teacher we observed first of all.  I thought 20 minutes was too long but the young lady who was leading the tour literally had to drag Charlotte and me away from the lesson – I wanted to stay ALL Day!  I wanted to be a student at Kings Colleges.  It is rare to see a teacher with so much enthusiasm and not just technical knowledge but an awareness of why you would need technology in the workplace.  I felt hungry for more knowledge....... Justin inspired me – his years of teaching experience were clear.

The host family visit was also an eye opener.  I have never visited a family in Bournemouth before. The houses are really big, spacious and the streets are wide and everything seems so clean.  Everyone I met was so friendly.  The host family was fantastic and very experienced, seeming to understand the importance of allowing students to be themselves while in the house – either outgoing and joining in with the family or maybe quiet and studious and wanting to spend more time in their room.  This is a great quality and one usually only gained from experience.

So the buildings were great – the students all looked happy, the staff were friendly and enthusiastic, the day was beautifully organised, the accommodation first class and the food – incredible! Our experience at Kings was fantastic as is, I imagine, the students’ experience.

I realise I have used the word Experience a lot in this blog – but to be honest I don’t care – because experience is what it is all about.

Stover School host British Council Agents Fair

Last week Bright World Partners, Stover School hosted the British Council International Agents Fair
providing an opportunity for independent schools such as Millfield, Wellington and The Royal School, Wolverhampton to meet educational agents from around the world. Agents from a variety of countries such as Belarus, Spain, Turkey, Nigeria and Japan had the opportunity to tour Stover School and meet with school staff.
This event was a fantastic opportunity for Stover to show new agents what they can offer, including their facilities and local attractions including Dartmoor National Park.  The agents were extremely impressed with their pupils who gave them a real insight into life at Stover School, and, once again, were excellent ambassadors for Stover. The event was a huge success and Stover was able to meet a number of agents from across the globe to continue to diversify our international community.
Bright World was among the attendees and very much enjoyed meeting new Partners who were interested in learning more about uk guardianship and placement.

Bright World attend AEGIS Spring Conference

Earlier this month Fiona Walters, Director of Guardianships and Natalie Hamson, Senior Safeguarding Manager attended The Aegis (The Association for the Education & Guardianship of International Students) Spring Conference in Oxford.
Natalie and Fiona joined a host of uk guardianship companies and boarding schools eager to learn about international student perspectives and how these continue to shape the rules put in place by The ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) and other governing bodies who inspect ‘association independent schools’ in the uk. ‘Schools in the Associations’ are ranked among the best in the world and educate more than half a million children in 1,200 schools.
Like ISI, Aegis is a governing body. It is their role to inspect uk guardianship organisations to ensure that they are carrying out sufficient checks on their host families and all other suppliers. Bright World is fully accredited by Aegis and recognises the importance of such an organisation to promote the safeguarding of international students in the uk.
After a welcome from Rosalind Hayes, Chair of the AEGIS Advisory Committee, Educational and Child Psychologist, Tom Hughes spoke about the psychology of belonging and its significance for international students. Tom’s work involves assessing the learning, social, emotional and behavioural needs of students to help schools, parents and students make good decisions about their education in the UK.
Phil Hardaker the vice principal at International College, Sherborne then delivered an excellent account of what it was like for International students to come across tutors and house staff expecting them to know and understand what they were talking about in their day to day life/lessons.  Phil has gained a wealth of experience working with international students and parents during his career in academia and is also a trained ISA Inspector.
After lunch ISI inspector, Tom James informed uk boarding school representatives of the new rules being put in place for schools who arrange guardianship and host families internally.  Lastly Jonathan Thomson from St Edward’s School then introduced several international students who spoke about their experiences with their respective guardians.
As well as informing schools of the changes that may affect their existing processes, the Spring conference allowed Aegis to raise awareness of the problems that international students face and how enlisting the services of an Aegis accredited guardianship organisation can help.

Bright World can offer guardianship at over 250 Boarding Schools and Universities across the UK. For an overview of the service we provide please read our Guardianship brochure below. For personalised quotation from the guardianship team, complete our enquiry form.

A view from the desk of… Cory Holden (Senior Guardianships Manager) and Natalie Hamson (Senior Safeguarding Manager)

We hear from newly appointed Senior Guardianships Manager, Cory Holden and Senior Safeguarding Manager, Natalie Hamson, who have both recently been promoted from their preceding Guardianship Care Manager posts.

Cory started working for Bright World almost 3 years ago, as a Guardianship Care Manager, dealing with the day to day welfare of students on our Guardianship programme. In his new role as Senior Guardianships Manager, Cory will look after fewer students, allowing him to oversee and guide the guardianship team as a whole.

CH: Coming out of university during the economic crisis left me with few options and I had been working as a temp at a local registrars firm for two years before the vacancy opened at Bright World. Although I was aware of the international student market, guardianship was completely new to me. I applied for the position of Guardianship Care Manager and was accepted. The past three years working at Bright World have been an amazing experience. I have recently been appointed Senior Guardianships Manager at Bright World, a newly created position, in which I will oversee the day to day management of the Guardianship team. I will report to Fiona Walters, our Director of Guardianships, and together we will make sure that all aspects of the Guardianship programme run smoothly and that we maintain the high standards parents and partners have come to expect.

1. What is an Educational Guardian?
CH: An educational guardian is an individual or an organisation that has been appointed to act as the UK based representative for an international student.

2. Bright World Guardianship Care Managers? What do they do?
CH: Once you enrol a student on the guardianship programme at Bright World, you will be assigned with a guardianship care manager (GCM). Your GCM will be your head office care contact for all administrational matters. You can contact your GCM for assistance with arrival transfers, host family selection and planning and of course with any questions you may have.

3. As Senior Guardianships Manager, how will you ensure that the main events i.e half term holidays, exeat weekends and student departures, run smoothly?
CH: Together with Fiona Walters, our Director of Guardianships, I will lead weekly review meetings with the guardianship team to ensure that up coming events and holidays have been prepared for correctly. Taking a step back and reducing the number of students in my care will allow me to focus on how we, as an organisation can uphold high standards of communication and care for our students.

4. What makes Bright World Guardianships unique?
CH: Bright World is a centrally controlled organisation. This means that all information and communication is fed through our head office. This allows us to keep a high level of control over important arrangements, thus allowing us to meet the strict safeguarding and care objectives that we set out for ourselves. As of December 2013 Bright World became the first organisation to join the Child-Safe assured Partner Scheme. Child-Safe is a unique organisation which aims to safeguard and prevent the abuse of children and young people living away from home.

Natalie began working for Bright World in 2012, as one of our Guardianship Care Managers. In her new role as Senior Safeguarding Manager, Natalie will ensure that we are upholding and obliging our child protection policies and safeguarding targets, whilst working alongside Managing Director, Lana Foster to further improve our safeguarding procedures.

NH: I joined Bright World as a Guardianship Care Manager in 2012. As a member of the Guardianship team I received extensive and specialist Child Protection training which fuelled my want to become a bigger part of the safeguarding effort at Bright World.

1. What is Safeguarding ?
NH: Safeguarding is the protection of children from maltreatment and preventing the impairment of children’s health/development. Bright World ensures that whilst studying overseas, children continue to grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.

2. How will your role impact Bright World Guardianships?
NH: In my new role as Senior Safeguarding Manager I will follow a carefully mapped out timeline to ensure that all of our suppliers, (taxi drivers, host families and all employees) undergo individual Criminal Record Checks and appropriate referencing. I hope that soon we will achieve Platinum status and continue on our mission to remain as the leading light here in the UK for the guardianship and safeguarding of international students.

3. How did you prepare and train for this role?
NH: I received Specialist Child Protection Training to Level 3 in 2013. I have also received invaluable preparation by getting to know the needs of parents and their children during my time as a GCM.

4. What is Bright World doing to ensure that they are safeguarding children within their care?
NH: As well as continued training we endeavour to improve and exceed the precautions and checks which we currently have in place following our partnership with Child-Safe International. As an organisation we fully endorse the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

Bright World students set for Oxford and Cambridge success!

Earlier this year we were delighted to learn that two of our pupils had received offers from the renowned Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Shan Hu and Pat Hirunpatawong are both currently studying at the prestigious Brighton College in East Sussex. Providing the two achieve the grades that have been predicted for them, they will both embark on one of the most sought after Higher Education experiences worldwide.

Pat enrolled on the Bright World Guardianship programme back in 2009 via our Thai Partners, at Mentor International. We will continue to act as Pat’s education guardian until he leaves Brighton this summer.
Pat has now been offered a place to read Economics at Ganville and Caius (University of Cambridge)

“I would like to say to the Hirunpatawong family, how delighted I was to hear that Pat has secured an offer from Cambridge. He really deserves it and has always been such a delight to deal with during my time looking after him at Brighton College - well done and my very best wishes to you all!”

Bright World Guardianships

Shan Yu was placed into Brighton College by our Director of Admissions, Sheena Trist back in 2012 after Chinese Partner, Chen Yu sent through the student’s details and asked us to recommend a good school.

“As Chen Yu started the application process early, we were able to recommend Brighton College and after being interviewed and sitting entry tests in Shanghai when the College visited China, a place was offered and subsequently accepted, so we are delighted to hear the news that Shan has received such a fantastic opportunity to study at Cambridge. This is surely a testament to the excellent teaching and staffing at Brighton.”
