Brittany Wong - Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival winner!

We would like to share with you a big achievement by Brittany Wong. Brittany is the daughter of our top agent Jimmy in Hong Kong - HKOSC - with whom we advise and place hundreds of students every year into UK boarding schools.

Brittany came first in her group at the recent Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, which took place last Tuesday - a fine achievement, as she was competing against 60 other students in the same group! Her winning speech was "Jack" by Daphne Kitching, about her pet dog being her best friend.

We think that Brittany will soon be winning scholarships to study in the UK!! Congratulations to Brittany, and her very proud Mummy and Daddy.

James Foster attends the Alphe Education Workshop in St Petersburg

James met many of our existing education agent partners who were all very pleased with the service that Bright World Guardianships has provided this year to our students.

James also met several new agencies and was proud to inform them of our Guardianship Service. He was also pleased to be able to demonstrate online our new Parent Portal that has revolutionised the way we communicate with our parents regarding the progress of their child. For them it is our own private Facebook page onto their pastoral life at school including a brilliant photo gallery keeping parents in touch with what is going on.

The next entry on the Portal will be our Host Family Care Plans - produced each time a student stays with a host family for the first time and to ensure our Child Protection procedures are followed to the letter.

Lana and James Foster, the Directors of Bright World were invited to Tea at the House of Lords by International College, Sherborne School. They were thrilled to be invited and to enter the House of Lords for the first time.

It was very impressive as was the tea comprising of a typically British Scones, with clotted cream and jam, dainty egg, salmon and cucumber sandwiches and some delicious cream cakes.

The day was hosted by the Governers of the school and a very interesting address was made by Baroness Garden on the importance of British education as being one of the UKs biggest and most important exports. Educating overseas students in the UK is an industry that generates 28 billion pounds per year to our economy which is greater than the banking sector. Baroness Garden thanked the guardianship companies and educational boarding school placement agents, including Bright World Guardianships and Education, for the contribution we are all making to the British economy in promoting the UK brand overseas and facilitating the placement of students into UK schools and universities.

She also praised the little known and recognised work carried out by guardianship organisations such as Bright World Guardianships who offer support services to international children studying in the UK.

Discussions then turned to Tier 4 Visas and in particular the difficulties faced by agents and guardianship companys with Visa Extenstions and Change of Sponsors. Lana Foster spoke up as did other companies asking for changes. More specifically in the way the UK Border Agency do not differentiate between age groups and destination schools. We also all agreed that Visa Extensions and Change of Sponsors for children who have already proven themselves to be genuine students should be much more straightforward. Time will only tell if what we said will help our industry but there was a Representative from the Department for Education at the event taking scrupulous notes so we hope so.

Bright World was very pleased to be invited to such a prestigious gathering.

We are close partners of International College, Sherborne School, both in that we place children in their wonderful preparation school as well as providing our guardianship service to many of their students. We thank Dr Christopher Greenfield, the Headmaster for inviting us and we look forward to a promised tour of the House of Lords next year!

School Placement and Admissions - What To Expect

How does the school placement process work?

When we receive your enquiry about student placement, Sheena Trist in our Admissions department, will contact you to ask for some information about your child. You will need to provide the basic details - name, date of birth and gender - and we will need to establish the year group you are applying for.

For international students, we also need to establish their level of English, so Sheena can take this into account when looking for the best and most appropriate school.

We will require school reports and a school reference, along with a personal statement written by the student. This statement plays an important role in placement, as schools like to see the students level of written English, and to find out a bit more about the child.

Sheena will then search for some boarding schools that meet your criteria, and will send a school profile of her suggestions to you to read through and digest. We assist with many schools not yet listed on our website, so please do still give us a call for free placement advice. If you have any questions about the school at this point, Sheena will be able to help you by phone or email. When you are happy with the school choice, we do ask that you return to Bright World to apply for the place at the school, so that we can continue to help you with our valuable knowledge and experience.

What happens next?

You will then receive a registration form to complete, and arrange for payment of a registration fee, the amount of which varies from school to school. One hundreds pounds sterling is an average, and this fee is non-refundable. At this stage, the majority of schools will require an entry test to be completed, which needs to take place under strict exam conditions. This can be done at British Council Office if overseas, or at the students current school. Sometimes the student will be invited to visit the new school to be interviewed.

Once you have registered and your child has been tested and an offer made, a deposit is then required to accept and secure the place. This is generally one term's school fees, plus one term's school fees will have to be paid by the first day of term. Deposits are refunded at the end of a students schooling, less any money outstanding on your account and assuming that proper notice has been given.

Your child will now have a place at boarding school, and we can now offer Bright World Guardianship services for the duration of your childs studies.

A Day in the Life of a Guardianship Care Manager, by Tammy Lindsay

My day at Bright World starts with a cup of coffee. Usually a strong one, as I know the day ahead is going to be busy! After saying hello and exchanging "how are you's" with everyone I get settled at my desk.

Ive usually got an inbox full of interesting messages, from students, parents, agents, and schools. Some are fun to read, but most are things for me to to, so I get stuck in. I ping off replies left, right and centre, and find that hours can go by, while I've got my head down concentrating on the next task. I'm preparing for a big half term holiday and I've got lots to organise!

Lunchtime creeps up on me, and I go for a walk to get some fresh air. The small village where the Bright World office is based is beautiful and I enjoy strolling through the lush green fields.

But it's nice to get back to work after my walk. I feel focussed and ready to go again!

More emails are waiting to greet me, and the phone lines are always busy too. I love the calls from parents, ringing us for a quick catch up about their son or daughter. Its so nice to get to know the parents of our students. I'm also in contact with the Bright World Local Co-ordinators or 'Buddy's' throughout the day too, and they send me questions and messages from the students and teachers.

I've got host families to organise this afternoon - there's a lot of excitement, as the new school year means new students for our host families, and I need to try and make sure that I match them up well. After all, we can't have a student with fur allergies staying in a house where they have a resident cat! It's like doing a big jigsaw puzzle, making sure the pieces fit perfectly together.

The day-to-day questions keep rolling in too. I go through the easy ones, and if there are any difficult queries I'll ask Fiona Walters, Director of Guardianships, to guide me through what I need to do.

It's time for another coffee. Perhaps a biscuits too - one of those scrummy double chocolate ones that Lana bought for everyone when she went to London for the Study World Conference.

Half term confirmations and transfer details sent, I can relax a little now, and go back over everything to make sure I haven't missed any important details. I've been making plans for the half term for weeks, and it's finally done! Once, twice, three times checked, and sometimes more! We all help each other out in the office and go through all our student plans. It's good to work as part of a team, we are a great support network for each other.

Home-time now, to rest and curl up in front of the TV with my dog! It's been a long and busy day, but I've loved every minute. I'll be back again tomorrow - see you then!

Are you missing home? Some helpful advice if you're suffering from 'culture shock'

No matter how old you are, or how experienced a traveller, being away from home can be both an exciting and frightening experience. You may find that you miss family, friends and pets, and even things like eating different foods to what you are used to can cause people to become anxious and upset.

We use the term 'Culture Shock' to describe unexpected or unwanted feelings when someone is taken out of their familiar comfortable surroundings and placed in an unfamiliar and new environment that they are unsure of.

Although experiencing culture shock is normal, it is not pleasant. But do remember that it will pass.

We have made some suggestions below of how you can help to ease the effects and feelings of culture shock:

Contact - keep in touch with your family and friends back home. If you don't have a mobile phone, then send an email. Schools often have a computer which students are able to use if they don't have their own laptop. Ask your teacher or houseparent for the times when you are allowed to use it, or the times of when you are able to use Wifi for your own laptop. If you have a mobile phone, send a text home or ask your parents to call you at an agreed time. Please do check with your mobile phone provider for costs. Alternatively, use Skype to video call home.

Diary - keep a diary, and write down your experiences of your first few weeks at school. Write down how you feel each day, what has made you smile, the new people you have met, and what you have learned.

Communication - Talk! Introduce yourself to other students, find out what you have in common. Involve yourself in games and social activities with others. Often, speaking with someone else who is also experiencing culture shock can help, as you can talk about how you feel to someone who understands. Your houseparents will also listen to you if you want to talk to an adult about how you are feeling, and may be able to offer useful advice, as they will have spoken to many pupils experiencing culture shock before. Your Bright World Buddy is also only a phonecall away.

Letter - write letters to your family and friends and ask them to write back to you. Its always a nice surprise to receive a letter in the post!

Photographs - put pictures of your family and friends on your wall, or on your desk in your room. Ask your parents to send a favourite teddy, or posters or postcards from home that you might find comforting.

Food - although you are not allowed to bring certain types of food into the UK from overseas, you may find that a local shop imports and stocks snacks that you are familiar with.

Lastly - use Facebook!! Being the worlds number one social networking site, its a fantastic way of keeping in touch with everyone. You can upload your pictures, and post messages on your friends' walls. Stop by the Bright World Guardianships Facebook page and tell us how you are getting on! We would love to hear from you!

Countdown To The Start Of The Academic Term

As the start to the new school year approaches fast, you may ask yourself if you have made all the necessary arrangements for your child’s return to school here in the UK. For parents of new students especially, it can be worrying trying to remember to do everything you need to. So Bright World have pulled together a checklist of things you will need to consider.

Guardianship – while your child studies here in the UK, he or she will require an educational Guardian, who will provide or organise accommodation during half term holidays and exeat weekends. The guardian will also provide emergency contact, in case of illness, or any problems at school. Bright World guardianships is highly recommended by UK schools as a first class provider of guardianship service. If you would like to read more about our services, please Click here.

Visa – for all non-EU residents, your child will need a visa to come and study in the UK. Bright World work in association with a Visa Advisor who will be able to help with any queries you may have regarding your child’s visa. You can contact Lana Foster with your questions.

Flights and Transfers – Please give the full flight details or inward travel arrangements to your childs’ Guardianship Care Manager at Bright World. We will make the necessary transfer arrangements, and ensure that your child is escorted safely to school. Sometimes flight schedules mean that students arrive before school re-opens. In such cases, we will be pleased to find a host family to look after your child until they can return to school.If you are accompanying your child to school personally, it is equally as important to let us know the details.

Uniforms – quite often, parents who accompany their child to the UK will be able to book an appointment with the school Uniform Shop, via the school website, or over the telephone. Staff at the Uniform Shop will be able to measure your child up for their school uniform and offer advice, but if you are at all concerned, either the houseparent or your child’s Bright world Buddy may be able to go along and offer assistance where needed.

Mobile Phone – In the UK, children under the age of 17 will require an adult to be present when they purchase a mobile phone contract or SIM card. Upon request, Houseparents often take their students into the local town to do this soon after arrival.

Registration with Local Police – Shortly after arriving in the UK, your child will by law, be required to register with the schools’ local police. Usually the houseparents will organise this – if in doubt please contact your child’s houseparent, or your Bright World Guardianship Care Manager, and we will be able to check for you.

We hope that your child’s journey to the UK is a safe and pleasant one, and we welcome any questions you may have about your childs Guardianship with Bright World.

As Guardianship Care Manager, Tammy is already helping to sort out all our guardianship students for their forthcoming half term holiday where they will stay with local host families or fly home to Mum and Dad.

Tammy is also already busy planning next academic year as well as we are predicting another increase in student numbers for September.

A big congratulations is in order for Coco Binfield, the very friendly chocolate Labrador that belongs to our Local Coordinator for Kent, Jenny Binfield and her family.

Coco has been very clever and given birth to six lovely puppies. All of them are chocolate coloured like her apart from one who is a lovely golden colour.

Jenny and her family will have their work cut out for them over Christmas!

Another set of outstanding IB Diploma results for King Edward's 6th Formers
King Edwards School, Witley is one of Bright World's close partner schools. The school is proud to announce that, following the issue of its IB results this week, it has maintained an average points score of 34 over the last 5 years. This is equivalent to the average achievement per pupil of 4 grades A at A Level, according to the UCAS tariff. The average points for candidates completing the diploma in 2010 were 35 points, compared with the world average of 29.

Twice as many pupils at King Edward's achieved the top grades than was the case worldwide. Eliska Haskovcova gained 44 points out of a maximum of 45 points and as a result she will be able to study law at Kings College, Cambridge. Ulrike Schindlebeck achieved 43 points and she returns to Munich to study medicine. Mareike Aichholzer achieved 41 points and she hopes to join Ulrike to study medicine in Munich. Head Boy, Andrew Baxter gained 5 grad A* & A’s at A level and he is is off to Oxford University to study Chemistry

In these days of grade inflation, the universities appreciate the transparency of the IB, which enables them to identify the top applicants. It is, of course, not only about results. Little wonder that the IB Diploma is increasing rapidly in popularity in British schools and on an international basis. Free from political interference, it is a course designed by educationalists to ensure that the rigorous academic programmes are matched with the means to encourage young people to become inquiring, caring, open-minded, reflective, balanced, principled lifelong learners. These are skills that universities and employers value highly.

The six subjects required at IB, together with an Extended essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Action and Service, demand a high level of commitment from pupils, but the rewards are many: increased likelihood of a university place, better preparation for independent learning which enables them to cope with university study and not drop out like so many undergraduates, better competitiveness in the international jobs market and a general readiness for life in the twenty-first century.

In these days of uncertainty surrounding the future of A Levels, it is no wonder that King Edward's is confident in its decision to offer the IB Diploma as its sole 6th form curriculum from September 2010.

The first wave of our guardian students who have a two week half term broke up last Friday. The second wave will be going during this week and most break up on Friday this week. We wish all our students who are flying home a lovely week at home and a safe journey.

All those staying here, we hope you enjoy the comforts of your host family and home cooking. For those who are going to their Bright World Host Family for the very first time, we hope you enjoy it. Of course, it will be strange the first time but we plan for you to stay with this family every time you have a school break and you don't go home so the idea is that gradually it really does become your home from home and you actually look forward to going there!

Volcanic Ash!

The recent Flight ban due to Volcanic Ash from Iceland coincided with the return of 80% of Bright World students returning from their Easter holiday. All arrangements that Fiona, Jane and Carol had made with our drivers were null and void. The skies were clear and all was silent.

All of our students are now back in the country except for just two so the exeat weekend this weekend is going ahead.

What next!??? If it doesnt snow a volcano blows.

Hong Kong Overseas Studies Centre is one of Bright World's longest serving agencies and for the past 5 years has unfailingly won the place of top agent for Bright World Education and Bright World Guardianships. From day 1 of our existence, the team at HKOSC have always supported us so closely. We have placed hundreds of Hong Kong students successfully into UK boarding schools together over the years and have acted as UK guardian to many of them too, staying in touch and making sure that their entire stay in the UK is a positive one.

We were so delighted, therefore that one of our favourite member of staff, Cici Chan, who has been with the company for as long as we can remember, won our prize. Well done Cici. You deserve this as we love working with you and you are so professional always.

James' Sinclair C5 project

Back in 1985, an eccentric British engineer, Clive Sinclair, introduced to the public what he thought would revolutionise transportation. Already a multi-millionaire thanks to his digital calculator in the 70’s and hugely successful ZX Spectrum computer, which had made home computing accessible and affordable for the masses, he ploughed nearly £12 million of his own money into producing the Sinclair C5. After a disastrous launch - the one-seater, open-air trike was introduced to an unimpressed media audience during the depths of a wet winter - sales were predictably slow. There was also a glaring issue in that the C5 was too big for pavements and too small for the road; a passing lorry would often show up the inherent vulnerability of the vehicle and attracted the venom of safety campaigners. Sales soon tailed off and thousands of unsold C5’s were evidence enough for production to be abruptly stopped. After losing his investment, Clive Sinclair went back to computers, eventually selling the Sinclair brand to Alan Sugar’s AMSTRAD company.

Many of these C5’s ended up languishing at the back of garages or sheds as people lost interest in them. This is where Bright World Director, James Foster found one when he attended a friend’s garage sale. Covered in dust and electrically dead, it seemed like an interesting project to bring back to life for James, who is a secret engineering geek. To James’ surprise, a growing number of C5 enthusiasts were out there – one electronics expert and C5 wizard lived less than half an hour away and was able to recondition the C5’s electronic modules and motor very cheaply. Indeed he states, ‘I have always wanted to have a classic car - I suppose you might possibly class it as one - but do not have the garage space. At least I don’t have nightmares about restoration costs!’ James’ C5 is now fully operational and a familiar buzz can be heard around Hurstpierpoint as he commutes into work – weather permitting!

What a start to the year! Who would have expected all that snow in the UK and how long it stayed around for. The first day was lovely and we all felt excited that there was snow and everything looked so wonderful. Then the arrival weekend for all our Bright World Guardianhips students loomed. Airports were closed, flights were delayed and cancelled. Often we were not aware if students were on flights or not. We had students arriving at airports and drivers unable to get to them on time. Then we had drivers waiting at airports for hours as students were so delayed.

Despite all the problems, we remained in control throughout. A special note of thanks is due to Fiona Walters, our Senior Programme Manager who held everything together as well as having the emergency phone 24/7. She managed the entire event with Carol and Jane in the office (or not in the office as some days they were snowed in and had to work from home). All students arrived safe and sound and everyone was fully aware of the situation throughout.

This is the key to a successful guardianship company and what makes Bright World Guardianships the leading one in the UK. We have excellent and experienced staff, host families and wonderful drivers who all have a genuine interest in the wellbeing of our students. A sensible and intelligent approach is necessary in these situations as well as a great network of contacts around the UK all pulling together to help out in a crisis.

Another special vote of thanks must go to Bruce Corbin and Jaro of Starfish Cars who did not let us down once and who literally went the extra mile for us in very adverse conditions.

Yesterday, 26th November was the day for our first group meeting of our Local Coordinators in the South for the academic year 2009/10.

Martyn Pape Dorset, Somerset, Tracey Welding, London and East Surrey, Bridget Phillips, West Sussex, Sian Delaney, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxford who are all establised Bright World Buddies, along with the Head Office team all welcomed our new Local Coordinator for Devon, Linda Genge.

We see our group meetings as an excellent way of sharing information and talking about our service and students. We are always looking at ways of improving our service to our students and their parents as well as developing closer links with schools.

Bright World joins Facebook

We like to think we are forward thinking at Bright World Guardianships and realise that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are becoming a way of life and are very useful ways of keeping in touch with a network of friends.

Last week we launched our new Facebook site and this can now be found via our website. We will inviting all our students, agents and parents to join our fanbase over the coming weeks.

In Memory of Jake

Lana and James are very sad to announce that Jake, their beloved Border Collie dog, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, 14th October. Jake had been diagnosed with cancer back in 2007 so he did very well to fight it for as long as he did.

Jake was very much a part of our Bright World office team as well, coming to the office every day and helping to guard us. He also welcomed visitors, always with a wagging tail and lots of kisses.

We will miss him terribly but we are sure he is up there watching down on us all and still guarding us and looking after us.

Our guardianship students, families and clients in West Surrey area will all know and love Sarah. Sarah has been our Local Coordinator and Bright World Buddy to students at Priors Field School, King Edwards School, Witley and Royal School, Haslemere for two years now.

Sarah is currently at home with her new born baby, Molly Isla pictured here with Sarah, her husband, Adam and two sisters Ava and Isobelle. We love the picture so much we just had to share it.

Local Coordinator's Summer Meeting

The Bright World Guardianships Head Office and Local Coordinator Team June 2009

At the end of June each year once all our students are safely on their way home or just about to leave, the Bright World Guardianships team, in its entirety, get together for a review of the year past.

This helps us to review how we are doing things together and makes us all feel much more part of a team.

This year was the busiest year yet with over 20 of us at the meeting. We were welcoming several new members of the team for the first time:

Sandra Clarke, Local Coordinator for Essex

We all agreed that the year has been very successful with very few problems. We all enjoyed a buffet lunch afterwards before heading home for a long summer ahead.

Lana Foster completes the Race for Life

Back in June Lana put on her trainers and ran the Race for Life with colleague Fran Clarke. The day was boiling hot and over 2,000 ladies from the Mid-Sussex area took part. Fran, being a fully qualified instructor, was given the task of taking the warm up session - the biggest class she will ever teach! She did a grand job and then Fran, Lana and a team of other girls from the local gym we all attend set off on the run.

Fran and Lana came in pretty much in the top 100 runners and did a time of 25 minutes.

We were very proud of our achievement and the money we had raised for Cancer Research.

Thank you to everyone who sponsored us. In case you think we look a bit strange, we were dressed in 80's aerobics style but Lana ditched the leg warmers - too hot!!!!

Summer days at Bright World

We hope all our students are having a good summer back in their home country with their parents. Life certainly changes here at Bright World in the summer. The windows are open all day (when it is not pouring with rain) and we are busy getting readying for the next academic year, enrolling new host families to take care of our newly arriving students, answering nervous emails from new parents and students in an attempt to reassure them that all be in place by the time the summer term starts.

It is really a different time of year and we do enjoy it. That is not to say we are not looking forward to seeing all our students back in September.

We are still chasing nearly all our students for flight details - please hurry and give them to us as soon as possible. Our drivers get really booked up at the beginning of term and it does help for us to be able to book your airport transfers as soon as possible.

Have a lovely August, and looking forward to seeing you all again in September.

X Factor excitement interupts Bright World Local Coordinator Meeting

There was much excitement last Thursday, 25th June during the Summer Term Local Coordinator review meeting for Bright World Guardianships. Lana Foster was in the middle of chairing the meeting with our now team of 20 when her text message announcements started to distract her! Basically her twin nieces Charlotte and Natalie were in London due to audition for the X factor in front of a studio audience of 2,000 people.

She and James dashed off after the meeting up to London and they were lucky and managed to catch the audition in time! The good news is that the girl band they have formed with three other friends (called Aspire) has got through and they are heading for Boot Camp!

We will keep you informed of their progress.

Bright World lowers deposit for guardianship students

The Directors of Bright World, have today made a decision to lower the initial disbursments deposit for our guardianship clients to just £1,000.

We had set the disbursments deposit, which is used for paying host family fees and transportation, at £2,000 as for some students who do not go home at half term and use our transport service this is actually what they will spend in one year.
By only asking for one amount this saves us time.
However, we appreciate that an outlay of £2,000 as well as the guardianship fees and of course school fees may be too much for some people and also sometimes it is excessive as some students go home at half terms so dont use our host family service.

Can I go to London?

Here we are mid half term and if I was given a pound for every time I had been asked already this week 'can I go to London?' I would be so rich I could give up working forever!!

Before I blog on about our rules and regulations and why in many cases I have to answer NO to the above question, let's just look at some statistics. First of all let's look at London - it is that big thing next to this text. It is HUGE.

It covers 241 square miles.

So when I am asked can I go to London it is like asking 'can I go to Hong Kong? - what do you mean? Are you going to Mongkok, New Territories? Kowloon? Disneyworld? Tsuen Wan? - see what I mean?

All those parents out there take note - London is not a small green village - it is a huge cosmopolitan city full of all types of people, good and bad. Our underground system is very complicated. I even get lost all the time on it. No-one has time to stop and help you if you are lost.

I know that half term can be boring in your host family - just staying in and studying but I am afraid we all had to do it. I can remember my half terms were boring when Mum and Dad didnt take me out every minute of the day but you make your own fun, watch TV etc. I was not allowed to go to London on my own until I was at least 17. My parents kept me safe and sound and that is what I am trying to do to you, our guardianship children.

So here are the answers to the question 'can I go to London'

If you are 15 or under - absolutley NO - unless you are with a responsible adult who is 25 or over and who has been approved by us and your parents. A signed permission to travel form needs to be sent to us from your parents.

If you are 16 or over - yes you can in the daytime and only if you are with other friends.

17 plus yes - but you must be back by 11pm.

You cannot under any circumstances, regardless of your age, stay out overnight unless permission has been granted by your parents and we have details of where you are and the adult of 25 plus who will be looking after you.

These rules have been set using Child Protection guidelines, after much consultation with parents in the UK and after much thought and consideration. We urge our overseas parents to listen to us and support us in our rules.

Our host families are the best you will find in the UK and with them our main goal is to keep overseas children here without their parents safe and sound. We dont want them to have bad experiences, just positive ones.

Anyway I wish a great half term to all and hope you enjoy the rainy weather! Apparently it will be warm at the weekend.

Easter greetings

We wanted to take this opportunity of welcoming all our guardianship students back from their Easter holiday. Apart from a few delayed flights all our students have arrived back safe and sound with no glitches. This is due to the fantastic team of drivers that we have and also Jane Forester and Carol Gill's hard work.

Communication with our students and their parents and agents is vital for the smooth running of our guardianship programme, especially if there are delays or flights change.

Thank you to all our students, parents and agents for their help in making this Easter holiday departure and arrival back a huge success.

We are now gearing up for the summer term, host families in place and all arrangements made.

Sheena Trist - Schools Placement Manager talks about her recent trip to Windsor!

I recently attended the British Boarding Schools Workshop which was held at the Beaumont House Conference Centre in Windsor, Berkshire over the weekend of 7-9 November. The workshop was organised by Suzanne and Anthony Rowse of SR Events and, as always, their organisation was impeccable.

At the event were over forty boarding schools and colleges and I managed to have appointments with 21 of them. I got to meet a lot of new schools and so they have now been added to the Bright World portfolio and I hope to be able to suggest these new schools to prospective new students and to start a good working relationship with them.

I also had the opportunity to meet Registrars and Marketing Managers that normally I only deal with by e-mail. It is so much nicer when you can put a face to a name! Also I met several agents that, again, I normally only know via e-mail.

To cap off the weekend, my husband joined me and we went to Wembley Arena to see Queen and Paul Rodgers. A brilliant show and a great end to a very busy weekend.

The week started well although Lana had just come back from Thailand so it was quite busy. I was expecting a busy week as this weekend is an exeat weekend when lots of our students have to leave school just for two nights so we help them with arrangements and they stay with their host family.

All was sorted out a couple of weeks ago and I was just ready to put the finer points of the week in place when certain students starting to change their minds about what they were going to do! How annoying is that!! It is really embarrassing having to cancel our host families although we do have to pay them if it is that late, but they have all made special plans to host their students. It also takes ages to unravel the work I have already done.

I dont mind too much because I do understand young people - I have four children of my own! I do realise that youngsters have a much better social life than I do!

Anyway all is OK now, everyone is happy and sorted out in the end. I am just off to spend a weekend with my family and leave Lana with the emergency phone!

Jane Forester is off on holiday for a week so I had better gear myself for another busy week next week - I will let you know how it goes - watch this space!!

First Term News

The gap in our blogs shows just how busy the Bright World Team has been since the start of term. I can hardly believe that all students arrived well over a month ago and already they are on half term this week and next, all safely with their host families or going home to see their families back home.

We are already making plans for all of our students' return at Christmas. Sometimes I think that people don't think there is much to this guardianship job but I can tell you that Jane, Carol and I have been flat out here in the office taking care of our guardianship programme and students.

In addition to that our Local Coordinators have been busy visiting all the students and are now poised to visit them all at half term where they are in new host families.

We do, however, feel that what we do is worthwhile as we have had some lovely comments from our students, parents and our overseas agents as to what a great job we are doing so although it is a hard and challenging job it is a very rewarding one.

Brittany Wong is turned just 5 years old in June 2008 and lives and goes to school in Hong Kong. She is the daughter of Jimmy Wong, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Overseas Studies Centre, Bright World's No 1 agent for several years running.

We are all very impressed with the art work that has been created by Brittany. This is a self portrait and shows remarkable talent for an artist of her very young age.

We are keeping our eye on Brittany - we think she has a lot of talent and could be a budding artist in the future.

Summer - what summer??????!!!!!!! Lana Foster blogs on about our weather

I cant believe the summer is practically over. Well actually it never really began here in the UK! The weather has been very disappointing here - rainy summer fetes, grass too long on our lawns because it is too wet too mow, tomatoes stay green in the greenhouse.

Jake, our dog won second prize in the Best Veteran Dog at the Small Dole Summer Fete. It didn't rain either! That was the highlight of the summer for us!

We are now looking forward to dark nights, log fires and sheepskin slippers - it will be Christmas before we know it!

Welcome back to all our students. We hope you had a great rest and are ready to start the new school year. We hope your exam results were what you wished for.

Summer Sales begin at UK universities?

Department stores and shops have their summer sales to clear stock in preparation for their new winter wares, universities have what has been universally known for years as ‘clearing’. However, whereas the department store ‘summer sale’ is more often a cynical attempt to get rid of stock that no-one else wants, university clearing is a genuinely useful way for students who have not secured a place at university to get a good course at one of over 100 institutions in the UK who still have places available. Clearing is designed for students who have applied through UCAS and who have either been rejected from their choices, or who have not managed to get the required grades to meet the conditions of their offer.

The student may not have met the conditions stipulated by their first choice university, or may have only just got around to even applying. It can often be a stressful time for students – the initial disappointment of not getting a place at their first choice is tempered by the knowledge that they will have to spend long hours on the telephone to international offices, faxing or emailing over grades - only to find out that the course of their choice is now full.

Attempts to make clearing easier for international students have alleviated this. International Offices spend busy months travelling to exhibitions throughout the world during July and August to make on the spot offers to students armed with their supporting documents and latest grade sheets.

Bright World works closely with their partner universities during this time of frenzied university placement activity. Students wishing to apply for a place are advised to get all their relevant documents ready. This means that as well as their transcripts, they will need to submit their academic references and a personal statement. If they are applying for a university placement in an art based subject, they would normally be expected to also send in their portfolio. For those students who have not applied through UCAS and who have sent in their documents for a place and meet all the conditions, a Record of Prior Acceptance form will be sent to them which they need to complete and send back to the university.

The important thing to realise during Clearing is that students need to meet the all the conditions for entry. If the university stipulates they need IELTS of 6.5 there is no point applying for a September place during August with an IELTS of 5.0 - your English won’t be up to scratch and there won’t be enough time to study for a presessional.

New areas for Guardianship for Bright World

Bright World Guardianships is soon to be 8 years' old and we have risen from just a handful of students in 2000 to approaching 150 in 2008. We have achieved this growth by basically doing a great job, growing slowly and carefully so that we can grow and still maintain and actually improve on our service year on year.

The key to our success is that we focus on keeping our students safe and happy. We also focus on providing their parents with a well thought out, organised service. We dont hide up anything or spend lots of money for no reason. With Bright World our clients always know where they stand and we are very open with them.

We are now ready to expand our areas which have historically been focussed in the South East. Now are are moving into Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Bedford, Cambridge, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. We are achieving this by working closely with our partner schools in those areas to help us to find great host families and also fantastic and caring Bright World Local Coordinators who take care of our students.

It's been a hard week's work for us all!!!

Well, all of us except one black and white hairy 'person' .........

What a busy week we have had this week at Bright World. Jane Forester is sunning herself on a beach in the South of France somewhere so extra work has been necessary for poor old Lana and Carol Gill in the office! Jane will be on holiday for yet another week but will return hopefully refreshed to carry on in the planning process for the guardianship students arriving in September.

A lot is going on at the moment. We are in full planning mode for next year for guardianship and as the bookings are coming in thick and fast we are busy visiting new host families and recruiting new Bright World Buddies to take care of them during the school year.

This week Lana Foster has visited about 8 families. Lovely people with huge and comfortable houses. Our students are so lucky!!!

Sheena will on holiday next week so we will all have to muck in on the boarding school placements. We do hope that Sheena has a good rest but we are already looking forward to her coming back as she has such a busy job that we know we will all have our work cut out to keep up with it all in her absence.

James is always busy with the finances and with university placements - august is his very busy month for placements with clearing and last minute bookings.

And during all this hard work our dog, Jake just lays asleep in his basket in the corner of the room, occasionally getting up to have a tickle under his chin or to ask for something to eat - it really is a dog's life!

At Bright World it has taken us 8 years to really get to grips with what makes a good host family and to realise that this is the key to our success for our guardianship programme. With good, generous, educated, kind and giving families our students get the very best experience from their stay - yes they actually enjoy their exeat weekends and half terms and look forward to going.

Our families are not sourced through newspaper advertising but through the schools we work with and through word of mouth. This means that high quality is consistent. Plus you have go the fussiest person in the world checking them out - Lana Foster, MD of Bright World demands a very high standard from our families.

'if I would not happily stay there for a week then I would not expect my students to' says Lana who does most of the host family interviews and house inspections.

Our families really enjoy the experience of hosting international students. Many of them have been boarders before so they understand how important it is to have a home from home during holiday times and your parents are not around.

Hong Kong July 2008

I have just returned from a week's trip to Hong Kong. I attended an education exhibition organised by one of our very close partner agents, Hong Kong Overseas Study Centre based in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. The event is always brilliantly organised and this year was no exception. The photo shows me in the middle with Jimmy Wong, CEO of HKOSC on my left.

What impresses me every year is the quality of students that I get to meet at these fairs. Overseas students looking for UK boarding schools can be as young as 10 when they come to see me on my exhibition stand. I try not to be scary but me sitting in front of them in my smart suit must be intimidating.

I was very impressed this year by a young boy called Eric. He is only 13 years old but so confident, so motivated to come and study in the UK. His English is also excellent and he has Grade 8 oboe to boot! What a great boy and would be a great asset to any school. We are now doing our best to find him the best boarding school possible for next year.

I enjoy my trips to Hong Kong. The families that I meet are so well educated, speak excellent English, are so well briefed on the British Education System and our schools. They really care about their children and their futures.

We have a lot of students for whom we are guardian who are from Hong Kong and so I enjoy following their progress. This year a couple of our students have gained places at top UK universities so we feel very proud to have helped them on their way through their boarding school life onto university.

Anyway it was pouring with rain in the UK while I was there and believe it or not it was raining in Hong Kong too!

I am now back safe and sound and gearing up for a new academic year starting early September. We are now planning all the host families for all our new and returning students coming back after their summer holiday.

Is life in a UK boarding school like Harry Potter?

When J K Rowling sat down to write Harry Potter she chose to set the story in a type of boarding school. Hogwarts is of course full of mystery and magicians and paints a glamorous and fun picture of life in a UK boarding school. The Harry Potter films and books are famous worldwide and at Bright World we are often asked if UK boarding schools look like or are similar in any way to Hogwarts!

According to the Boarding Education Alliance, the Harry Potter books have helped to re-invent the image of UK boarding schools. "The books have probably done more for boarding than anything else we could have imagined," says Ann Williamson, campaign director of the BEA, which represents 170 boarding schools.

Attending a UK boarding school is no longer perceived as being sent away to school but as a wonderful life opportunity to live in a community with people from around the world. As well as receiving an excellent education in small classes, the opportunities for activities and learning new skills outside the classroom are endless. Admitedly, we at Bright World have never seen wizardry on the curriculum of any boarding school but students have the chance to do drama, film studies, music technology, outward bound persuits, climbing, golf - the list is endless.

Most UK boarding schools are also steeped in tradition with an interesting history. When we visit the many schools that Bright World works with we do sometimes compare the dining rooms, classrooms and corridors to Hogwarts because they do look similar!

So in answer the the question in the title of this blog? Yes - life is a bit like Harry Potter minus the wizards and demons but with all the camaraderie, learning and excitement.

A Bright World guardian will ensure that all the needs of your child are met and offers parents peace of mind and security in the knowledge that there is always someone there to give a helping hand. Our Guardianship programme offers a total care package from day one of a student’s stay in the UK and throughout their study period. An important part of our job is to find a host family for your child during holiday times when they have to leave school. Our host families are all very carefully chosen, regularly visited and police checked.

What is included in the Bright World Guardianship Programme?
• Assistance with application to school or college
• Liaison with school to ensure safe transfer of student to and from airport
• Arrival report to parents including initial academic and welfare information
• 24 hour emergency telephone assistance
• One visit to the student in the first term followed by a full academic and welfare report
• Assistance with travel and accommodation arrangements for visiting parents
• Ongoing day to day liaison between the school, the student and the parents
• Half term and holiday arrangements

Additional guardianship services can be made available at an extra charge. These may include:
• Personal airport and holiday transfers arranged by Bright World
• Attendance at parents’ evenings and school events
• Arrangements of host families and language courses during holidays
